Incompetent Cervix

Hi ladies

Have any of you had a miscarriage as a result of an incompetent cervix? If so what symptoms did you have prior to the miscarriage? Did you get sharp shooting pains in the cervix?

Thanks for your information - I am sorry to ask such a thing because I know what it is like to lose a child- I just wanted some real information as opposed to the kind you find in a text book.

Ps- Do they normally measure your cervix length at the 12 week scan in Australia?

I have incompetent cervix but thankfully didn't lose my first son. At my regular 20 week ultrasound they saw that I was already dilated and the sac was coming through my cervix. They did a rescue cerclage and I was on strict bed rest. Had him at 33 weeks and he's doing great.

I had no symptoms what so ever though. I had no idea I was dilated at all. It's an absolute miracle they caught it when they did. Even one more day could have had a very different outcome.

From what I know about it, most people with incompetent cervix don't know until it's too late. I don't know about Australia, but in the US they don't usually look for it unless they have reason to (previous surgery on the cervix, precious late term miscarriage).

With this pregnancy they put in the cerclage at 14 weeks and measure it via internal u/s every two weeks. I'm also on bed rest, though not as strict as last time.

Are you worried you may have incompetent cervix? Hope everything is going well for you!

I'm not too sure but for the last 3 days I have had these sharp pains in my cervix and I also have this feeling of pressure/heaviness in my lower left abdomen. I have felt this for a few weeks but it's getting more noticable each week. It also happens to be where the baby likes to sit so maybe that is why I feel it- I am 14.2 so just assume I would not feel much at all.

I had a d&c at Xmas last year because I lost my baby and I have heard that this can weaken the cervix. I saw the Dr yesterday and she did not feel like it was a concern and she mentioned that my 12 week scan did not report any abnormality- however I read the report and it looks like they did not check the cervix at all??

I just don't know if I should press the matter further- how common is sharp cervical pain in pregnancy? She also said the pains could be due to growing or the virus I have at the moment (cold and flu) but I have never heard of a virus causing cervical pain before?

I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm not sure about how common cervical pain is during pregnancy. I think you should trust your instincts though and if you feel like something isn't right you should insist on more tests. I think if it were me I'd at least call and ask if they checked your cervix during the 12 week check up since it doesn't show anything on your report. Hopefully it's all just normal pregnancy pain. Good luck with everything!

I lost my son at 20 wks in 2003. I went into labor with back pains and my water broke. I got pregnant a year later and they did a cerclage due to cervix. I got put on bed rest. We were packing and moving into a bigger place so bed rest was kinda hard to do. I had the cerclage taken out at 37 wks. I had my son two weeks later and I was induced. I am pregnant with our third and my doctor said I would need to have another cerclage again but bed rest may or may not happen. I am suppose to have it done in October.

They classified my situation with my son Gabriel as incompetent cervix, however have later said they have no idea why my cervix shrunk and that I may have had an infection. Anyhow, I don't remember any cramping but I did have spotting at about 23 weeks which led to an internal ultrasound showing that my cervix had shrunk down to just under 2cm and I had a bulging sack. I was sent by ambulance for a rescue cerclage and, without telling all of the details, put on hospital bedrest. My son decided he couldn't stay inside and I went into labour at 24 + 3. My son (1lb 12oz) held on for 6 days but got an infection and passed. Anyhow, I went on to have another miscarriage and then got pregnant again. They did not do a cerclage with this pregnancy, but I have been watched very closely. They told me at the earlier scans that there wasn't really enough pressure from the baby to properly measure my cervix for incompetence, but it measured 'normal' as best as they could tell me. I am now 36 + 1 and now just waiting. This pregnancy was problem free but so filled with constant fear. It hasn't been an easy experience to get through.

All the best to you.

I have an incompetent cervix I've lost 3 babies @ 19 weeks with a cerclage with the last 2. After switching Ob's I found that my cervix isn't my only issue a gene malfunction from birth is the actual culprit. I'm currently 6 weeks pregnant & I'm confident that this pregnancy will be a success. I pray the same for you.

I have an incompetent cervix. We lost our first son at 20 weeks in December. It hasn't been a whole year yet since we lost him but were 23 weeks with another boy. That day everything was completely normal at first. Me and hubby made deviled eggs and we were sitting on the bed eatting them then I started to feel weird. So I laid down in bed and over the next few hours the pain got worse and it felt like I had to poo. I found out later that I wanted to push him out. But after goin to bathroom a few times with no poo comin out I noticed there was blood when I wiped. By that time I knew something was very wrong because I couldn't sit or walk without excruciating pain. (this was first so I had no idea I was in labor). So we drive to hospital and find out my water was comin thro my cervix and I was dilated to 4 cm. They couldn't do emergent cerclage and they broke my water and he came the next day. I got my cerclage put in at 15 weeks this time and I've been seeing my ob every week (finally every 2 weeks now) and I get cervical length checks every 2 or 3 weeks to. I'm monitored very closely and are very optomistic that were goin to have a live birth this time :) if you feel something isn't right tell your doc. Better safe than sorry. Good luck hun

I was diagnosed with I/C two Years ago when my husband and I lost our baby at 18 weeks. I felt no pain I knew something was wrong because my water broke one night. They couldn't save the baby or even tell what the gender was. This time I was funneling and started to diale at around 23 weeks. They did an emergency cerclage this time and put me on bedrest they will be removing it next week when I'm 37 weeks! I trully recommend that you are pushy with your docs to make sure they pay attention to your concerns. If I wasn't persistant with them about my fears Im not sure they would have sent me to the perinatologist to do bi monthly checks on my cervix. If I hadn't been seeing them I fear the same thing wouldve happened this time. Good luck to you.

I'm wondering if this is what I had withmy son. The dr said it wasn't but we have no idea what caused me to go into premature labor. I had my son at 23 weeks 6 days, no warning dialed to a 9 in an hour and a half (from the first small cramp I had to the time I got to the hospital & they checked me... I just found out today I am preg w/ #2 and I've been looking up everything I can before I go in for my first appt... I've done a lot of research on progesterone right after Zach was born and they told me with this preg we'll start FFN testing at 21 weeks but I have been wondering today about incompetent cervix & cerclage... We'll see

It's a possibility that it was I/C. So you actually had Zach at 23 weeks and he survived, that is such a blessing! I did progesterone shots this time (rather my husband gave them to me) ever since the cerclage was placed. Not sure if they helped or if it was the combo of that and the cerclage? But better be safe than sorry.
