Drug testing on moms and babies?

Is it true that they drug test the mother and baby's blood after they are born?

My hospital told us they do.. And if they find any drugs in your system that you'll be saying bye bye to your baby.. Pretty much exactly how it was put

I can't remember which state, but I heard a few months ago there is a state that is going to start mandatory drug testing for those on public assistance. I get random drug test at work and I don't care, so if I had to get assistance and be randomly tested, I wouldn't care either.

I think it should be mandatory. God forbid your child goes through many pricks throughout their lives, one extra won't kill them. And if you have nothing to hide, quit your b****ing, sorry they want to make sure your child is going to a good home and not. Somewhere it can get hurt or sick. Jeez reminds me of the whole body scans and pat downs at the airport, it's a nessacary evil ladies!!! Rather they were safe than sorry!

not even gonna go into detail because everyone likes to argue but for the safety of babies born to drug addicts it should be done. Some of them may clean up after having their baby taken.

Or maybe if more people know they test at the hospital, they will stop using drugs during the pregnancy, that's a good outcome for the baby too

Warning to all of you moms about this topic- I read a story in the news a few months back about a woman who had her baby taken away from her because they did a routine drug test and it came back positive. After investigating the situation they found out that she had NOT being using drugs and had actually eaten something with poppy seeds the day she went into a labor. There's something in poppy seeds that can give a false positive on a drug test! At least that's what they claimed on the news. I had never heard of poppy seeds having that effect but just in case, I will not be eating any around the time I'm due. That poor woman had her baby taken away for a whole week before CPS would give it back to its mother.

Poppy seeds do give a false positive for cocaine I believe. I would hope that if they do get a single positive test from someone they would test again.

Some hospitals do it routinely on everyone. It depends on where you are and who your care provider is. If a test comes up positive, what is done about it depends on the same factors.

Heroin is made from the poppy plant. You test positive for opiates after eating alot of poppy seeds.

I work with drug addicts and have been to countless seminars. The amount of poppyseeds that you would have to eat to cause a false positive is around 5-6lbs. No person can eat that many seeds. It's a bogus excuse for a desperate person....

Where I live they test at most doctors offices every visit and when you deliver they test both you and your child.

When I lived it SC my OB told me the test blood in the umbilical cord of every child. I am not sure about here in Maine but I think its a good protection for the child. As it is harmless for a baby, even if tested by urine collection, and ur clean, why r women so worried. Would u rather doctors not care about ur childs well being?
I am also on state assistance right now but I have seen how a high majority( not all ) of those who get assistance are drug users. It disgusts me but it honestly happens a lot... Most people get drug tested for work so whats the difference... Just dont do drugs and ur fine

I agree women shouldn't use drugs at all no matter what but I didn't want a bunch of drama started in the other threads.

Most places dont always say.. They do it discreetly and things only get brought up if they find drugs... She told me in SC because when I first went in she thought I was a young druggie.. I was 20 but looked maybe 14 and people always assume Im a horrible young mom till they realize Im not that young lol...

I think people worry more about the invasion of privacy and lack of consent...if they're testing for that what else could they do without permission? Start taking dna samples of everyone? how else does this information get used? Etc etc, it could be a slippery slope as technology advances...I have no problem being tested for drugs but would prefer the courtesy of consenting.

first of all if u have nothing to hide then y get all upset? sounds suspicious. yes zeek land of the free. of course u had to put your two cents in here seeing as how u r a stoner. but its okay bcz your doc prescribed it for anxiety?. ya okay. the state of Louisiana just passed a law that everyone on government assistance must be drug tested. and if u saw the ppl that lived in the free housing projects by where i live? and read about alll the drug busts and shootings? u would feel the same way. again if u have nothing to hide then y freak out? u make up whatever excuses you would like to. also in highschool i worked in a grocery store for 4 years and ppl on the food stamps were unbelievable. they did alllll of there shopping in one day and used everything on the card. also the card has a cash benefits side and u can get up to 30 dollars cash back like when u write a check. so ppl would come in w their 5 kids. get 5 bags og 25ยข chips do 5 different transactions get $150 bucks and buy cartons of cigarettes and cases of beer. so please. and my tax dollars pay for these losers? ? f*** that.

At my hospital they test all mom's who have a known drug history (like tested pos on Dr drug screen at beginning of pregnancy or when you can actually smell it on them), a history with CPS, mom's in preterm labor, mom's with little or no prenatal care, & those that come in acting intoxicated. If the mom's come back positive they test the baby when it's born. If mom is negative they don't bother.

If the mom is positive & the baby is negative they just refer to social services but rarely do they call CPS. I'm not sure if I personally agree with that because obviously she exposed that baby in utero but was bright enough to not do it just prior to delivery. If both are positive they call CPS. CPS usually does remove the baby but not always. 3 months ago they let a mom & baby that was positive for meth go home together. The baby came back a month later, she was abandoned at the ER covered in blood. Initially the staff assumed she was a newborn because she was only 5# but when they washed her off they could tell she was older. Had head injuries & was bleeding from her rectum. The police were able to trace this baby back to that mom. Everyone was obviously disgusted & horrified but also pissed off they let this poor baby go home with that woman in the 1st place. "But she was breastfeeding & bonding so well".....sick b**** still let someone rape her newborn & apparently barely fed her once she got home.

A few months prior to that CPS let another pos mom & baby leave together & this mom had lost custody of 3 babies straight out of the hospital before this child for drug abuse. They found her little boy, about 3-4 weeks old alone, in a garage laying on the concrete floor in just a filthy diaper in November or early December. The kid would have froze (&/or eventually starved) to death if the neighbors hadn't heard this kid crying & called the owners who were renting to the mom & had a key.

I think everyone should be tested. Yes there will be a lot of people that the test comes back negative and there was nothing to worry about but what about the babies that do test positive? I think if the testing saves only a few babies it's worth it. I don't smoke, drink, or use illegal drugs but I am fine with them testing my baby and myself as a routine procedure. Most jobs require drug testing and everyone is fine with it, well this is the most important job of your life. Why would it be an issue unless you have something to hide.

Ok I did a bit of research and I came up with some actual legal documents and such. Not one of the 5o states is federally or locally legally mandated to drug test mothers or infants. However guidelines are provided on when situations warrants suspicion and action. I think an initial maternal screen is the first step. If the maternal screen is negative then the criteria to move on to baby is not met. Also, and mind you this one was recent so it might explain why some of you were tested against your knowledge. It was recently passed that it is a violation of search and seizure federal law to drug test mother or infant without consent. Somewhere in the fine print, if your hospital does it, you will sign for it. That's federal law so anything sneaky is illegal. Also I'm not sure if the bill was passed to drug test all on assistance in Louisiana yet. I know it's being discussed but from what I am seeing with my own two eyes and my boyfriend manages six bars in the heart of new orleans so we see a lot, it's definitely not happening. Same with mandated drug testing at hospitals. While I'm sure a nicer one somewhere in the vicinity of south east Louisiana is, the major urban beasts? there is no way. These people I've had the misfortune of knowing wouldn't be bringing home their babies. The meconium and cord testing is expensive, they're not going to do that unless they got a red flag somewhere and that probably comes from your dr.

Ok so YESTERDAY they voted on random drug testing of welfare participants in my state and it still has to go to senate, and it's only those on cash assistance or welfare. Same law maker tried to pass a bill for random drug testing of tops scholarship recipients whose parents make over 250,000 o.O ooook why just the rich kids? Anyway that's that, I hate not having my information right so now I do haha
